Professor Shen Yuming from Capital Normal University Invited to Give Academic Report at IDP

On May 24, 2018, at the invitation of the Department of Earthquake Science, Prof. Shen Yuming of Capital Normal University gave an academic report entitled "Understanding the Changing Planet: Comprehensive Thinking of Geography". Teachers and students of Geography Science in Department of Earthquake Science listened to the report.

Prof. Shen firstly introduced the characteristics of geography. Through a large number of cases of geographical phenomena and detailed data at home and abroad, we can have a good understanding of the comprehensive, regional and practical characteristics of geography. Then, he focused on the comprehensive thinking of geography, including map thinking, landscape thinking, spatial thinking, process thinking, system thinking, etc., and emphasized the establishment of Professor Shen first introduced the characteristics of geography. Through a large number of cases of geographical phenomena and detailed data at home and abroad, we can have a comprehensive understanding of the comprehensive, regional and practical characteristics of geography. Next, he focused on the comprehensive thinking of geography, including map thinking, landscape thinking, spatial thinking, process thinking, system thinking, etc., and emphasized the establishment of these thoughts is helpful for us to deeply understand and analyze the relationship between geographical elements and human and land through the surface natural phenomena and with the help of GIS and other geographic information technologies. Finally, Prof. Shen introduced how to systematically analyze the geological phenomena from point to surface, from local to regional, and from the perspective of geographical research. Prof. Shen concluded that the study of geography should not only be able to explain the past, understand the present, but also predict the future. He hopes that we can comprehensively and systematically understand today's natural, human and social phenomena from the perspective of space-time changes.
